A magistrate has questioned how Danielle Vagner blew twice the legal blood-alcohol limit when she claims she drank three glasses of wine hours before the crash.

Danielle Vagner, the founder of the Kookai fashion house, has been convicted and fined for drink-driving after a hit-run crash in the wealthy inner-Melbourne enclave of South Yarra.

Vagner blew a blood alcohol reading of 0.099 more than an hour after she crashed into the front of a house in South Yarra and kept driving her mangled Range Rover on its rims through side streets on June 18 last year. She drank three glasses of rose at lunch that day, Melbourne Magistrates Court has heard, and went to the dentist. The night before she took three Valium tablets because of pain in her tooth and gum.

Mr Mealy convicted and fined the 54-year-old fashion house owner $800 and ordered she complete 80 hours of unpaid community work over the next 12 months. She must also undergo alcohol and drug treatment, take part in a road trauma awareness program and has been disqualified from driving for the next 12 months, though her lawyer previously said she had not driven since the crash.

Mr Mealy said Vagner's ability to drive safely was compromised by the alcohol and medication she consumed in the hours before the crash.Vagner pleaded guilty to exceeding 0.05, dangerous driving, driving an unroadworthy vehicle, driving an unregistered vehicle, and failing to stop charges. Three charges, including reckless conduct endangering serious injury, were withdrawn by police prosecutors.
