Dozens of prominent Australians, from the Australian Financial Review’s editor-in-chief to Mike Cannon-Brookes have been branded “Russophobic” and banned from travel to Russia.
Your Europe correspondent is missing from the list, and will seize the opportunity to book his ticket to Russia as soon as possible. He won’t be joined by Nine chairman Peter Costello or CEO Mike Sneesby, who are both in Moscow’s sights.
The only new politician on Russia’s list was South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas, who was surely doomed by his Lithuanian heritage. Roughly half the list comprised journalists and media executives, with another quarter coming from the armed forces or the defence department.The Russian roster of sanctioned military and defence personnel seemed less random than the list of journalists. But there are some signs the list may have been compiled in a hurry, or else its authors struggled with either terminology or translation.
