Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek has approved the extension of three coal mines in NSW just weeks after rejecting the proposed McPhillamys Gold Mine in August.
Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek has raised eyebrows for approving three coal mine extensions in a single day, just weeks after halting a long-approved regional gold mine project.
Ms Plibersek defended the decision and assured the approvals were made based on “facts” and the “national environmental law”. “The Labor government is deliberately and proactively approving climate-wrecking coal mines under laws they know are broken. It’s wrong and irresponsible,” she said. Despite prior state and federal approvals, she overturned the project due to its location on land deemed a significant Aboriginal area.
