Former Queensland premier Peter Beattie is saying out loud what is plainly obvious: Steven Miles had a very small runway in the lead up to this election.
When Annastacia Palaszczuk stood aside as premier late last year, she left Miles with a 10-month window to get Labor into a winning position for the 2024 poll.
"Transition is all about what's good for Queenslanders. That's what's important. And that's why when you have a transition you make sure that the person who is coming in has plenty of time."As Steven Miles leads his party to the October 26 election, he's set out to put his own stamp on the government.
"Annastacia was a great premier for the state – got us through COVID and everything else," Bullock said."I think if Steven had had a bit longer, he could have proved to Queensland even more the great things that he wants to do for the state.Palaszczuk was a no show at Sunday's campaign launch. Bligh, who is now head of the Australian Banking Association, also wasn't there.
"The one thing I'd say about if there had been longer than 10 months, there is a limit to how long you want to be the leader without a mandate, without being elected in your own right," he said. And although the event featured many of the traditional elements of a launch, there were a couple of modern twists.
It's a far cry from the 2020 Labor launch, when Palaszczuk walked off stage to the 1989 classic, I Won't Back Down, by Tom Petty.
