New independent ACT Senator David Pocock has given a much-needed lifeline to Labor’s 2030 emissions reduction target as the new government scrambles to secure support in the Senate.
Energy and Climate Change Minister Chris Bowen last week confirmed the Labor government would introduce new legislation when Parliament sits at the end of July.

There’s some real concerns about the way we’re getting to whatever target we set and that’ll be my focus.” Mr Pocock was unable to provide specific amendments he would propose to the government other than pushing for “integrity” within the Emissions Reduction Fund and the way in which targets are calculated and achieved.
“I’m committed to being constructive when it comes to actually ensuring that we legislate something and then look at other ways to actually ramp that up over time,” he said. Greens leader Adam Bandt was less positive about Labor’s legislation, calling on the government to bolster its targets and commit to banning new gas and coal projects.
