Labor backbenchers Luke Gosling and Alicia Payne will move private member’s legislation to permit euthanasia laws in the ACT and NT.

The bill is set to be co-sponsored by Mr Gosling, the MP for Solomon in the Northern Territory, and Ms Payne, who represents the federal seat of Canberra.“All Australians should have equal democratic rights, whether they live in Canberra or Queanbeyan,” Ms Payne said. Each of the states has already legislated assisted dying laws, but ending the territory ban is expected to be fiercely debated in federal parliament.

“The NT and ACT deserve to have the same rights as all other Australians to make decisions for themselves, which is why I’m proud to be moving a private member’s bill along with my ACT colleague Alicia Payne to get this done as soon as possible when the new parliament convenes.”
