A Labor MP who was vocally opposed to turning back boats has been grilled about her recent backflip on the policy.

Fiona Phillips represents the marginal seat of Gilmore, located on the NSW South Coast. She opposed boat turn backs in 2015 and was signatory to a letter rejecting the measure during Labor’s national conference.

When pressed by Sky News Senior Reporter Jonathan Lea about her stance on boat turnbacks, Labor leader Anthony Albanese attempted to step in and answer for her.“Well, there’s been two national conferences since then, and as an MP, I absolutely support Labor’s policy,” she said. “I, like any member, have been to national conferences, and just like we should, we discuss items, and I support that position.”
