Shadow Treasurer Jim Chalmers says “the sooner that we can get a new relationship with the UK post-Brexit sorted, the better”.
Mr Chalmers told Sky News the Australian Labor Party intends to “engage constructively” with the UK, and ensure it obtains a new trade deal which is “good for Australia”. Mr Chalmers compared the May election loss to that of its Labour “counterpart in the UK”, which suffered its worst election result since 1935.
The Shadow Treasurer said the ALP had “lessons to learn” from the May election result, admitting it needed to build "much bigger constituencies of support", beginning with "a bedrock of economic credibility”.
