With the next federal election on the horizon, the federal government has allocated $25.1m over four years to combat “misleading or incorrect” content in electoral communications and political advertising.The midyear budget update includes $10m over two years for a “national public education campaign” to help prepare parents, young people and teachers for the social media ban for under-16s, which will officially start in November 2025 after laws passed federal parliament.

The Myefo budget papers said R&D for gambling can “exacerbate addiction and associated harms, while activities related to tobacco can increase health risks”. “Excluding these activities will ensure that the government is not subsidising this type of research and development,” the papers said.
