Shadow Treasurer Chris Bowen is expected to announce January 1 next year as the start date for Labor's negative gearing plan if his party wins the election.

Shadow Treasurer Chris Bowen is expected to announce January 1 next year as the start date for Labor's negative gearing plan if his party wins the election.

This will give investors just over six months, which Mr Bowen says is adequate time to beat the curbs on its policies and allow time to draft the legislation and work to pass it through the Senate before Christmas. Labor says the policies will help housing affordability and push new construction. Mr Bowen will confirm the start date in a speech to the Financial services council on Friday.
