Federal Labor Senator Kimberley Kitching has died from a suspected heart attack in news that has left her colleagues distraught. She was 52.
Labor caucus members were distraught when colleagues, including Labor leader Anthony Albanese were told of the Victorian senator’s sudden death on Thursday.Mr Albanese said the Labor family was in shock at the tragic news.Prime Minister Scott Morrison said he was deeply saddened at her sudden death.Senator Kitching led a push in Parliament to pass laws to seize the assets of individuals who had committed human rights abuses around the world.
She was a Melbourne City councillor and an adviser to state Labor governments in Victoria before entering the Senate in 2016, later joining the frontbench as shadow assistant minister for government accountability. “To know Kimberley was to be touched not just by her serene intellect but her incredible warmth and vivacity,” he wrote.
Starting with a private member’s bill, she persuaded others in the Labor caucus to back the idea and saw the work result in the passage of a federal law with bipartisan support last November.
