A packaging disrupter has urged the Labor government to step up a plastic policy that will only this year ban the burger ‘clam shells’ axed by McDonalds in 1991.

“Impose a tax on every polystyrene box that’s going into the environment. Why are these companies filling their pockets at the cost of the environment?”

“We are currently supplying the Westgate tunnel in Melbourne where it is used as a void former in the bridge abutments, and that is an engineering requirement. “Any plastic is bad for the environment if not managed properly from cradle to grave. Every plastic needs a robust recycling network that is cost-effective for both processor and consumer and can be scaled to make it accessible,” he said.Ms Ley’s plan envisages that 70 per cent of plastic packaging would be recycled or composted by 2025. Stewardship of the plan now falls under new environment minister Tanya Plibersek.

But sheep have a carbon footprint of their own through the methane they belch and the industrial washing – or scouring – of wool.
