Shadow Treasurer Chris Bowen says if the government intended their 2019 Budget as a re-election pitch, it was "very underwhelming".He hit back at the government's claims of a $7.1 billion surplus, saying that while it had been forecast, it had not yet been delivered."A quarter of it is based on an underspend in the NDIS ... the rest comes from a quite heroic wages forecast," he told Nine Finance Editor Ross Greenwood on Money News.
"We support the low and middle income tax offset. Why wouldn't we? It catches up to our policy," he said.Bowen said Labor will match the coalition's tax cuts for low and middle income earners, but argues the federal budget has no plan to lift wages. "This is essentially a copy of what we proposed last year, and they are simply catching up to us," he said in a statement on Tuesday night.
"But the Liberals are so out of touch that they've given a much smaller tax cut to two million Australians earning less than $40,000.Labor will fix this and give these working people the tax relief they deserve." Mr Bowen did criticise the budget for doing nothing to tackle power prices or climate change."Nearly a quarter of comes from spending less on disabled people. Not something to be proud of.
"There is no plan for wages, no plan to tackle power prices, no plan to address climate change, and no plan for the future." Labor also said the government's promise to pay off net debt by 2030 was "laughable" because debt had doubled on the coalition's watch.
