Laos' economy has been on the brink of collapse due to a spiraling debt crisis that is crippling the country's finances and bringing it perilously close to default.

The $5.9 billion China-Laos railway linking Vientiane to the Chinese border is a key spur on Beijing's Belt and Road Initiative "I think Laos is at the mercy of being part of China's economic plans, whether it is train connections or the hydropower that Laos can produce," Murphy said.
