Ofgem has dropped the energy price cap to £1,923, effective from 1 October - but Labour has hit out at the government, saying the 'figures demonstrate the scandalous Tory cost of living crisis'.

The fact poor families could end up paying higher energy bills this winter is the “reverse” of levelling up, founder of the Oasis Charitable Trust Steve Chalke says.

But with the government support seen last winter now over, a third of families could receive higher bills this winter. He pointed to the “huge disparity” between GCSE results in the north and south as another example of the divide between rich and poor. The fall in the energy price cap to below £2000 for the first time since early 2022 sounds like good news - but not everyone will benefit equally.

He hit out at"13 years of failed Tory energy policy", which he said had"left Britain as the most exposed economy in Western Europe to the effects of Putin's war".Laying out Labour's plans for tackling the energy crisis, he said the party would"act to close loopholes and bring in a proper windfall tax on oil and gas giants ... alongside our plan to make Britain a clean energy superpower".

"This is an extremely worrying time for people who have fallen behind on their energy bills, whilst grappling with high costs across the board."Energy Security Secretary Grant Shapps has given his thoughts on the energy price cap announcement this morning. "And we are successfully driving Putin out of global energy markets so he can never again hold us to ransom, and we are boosting our energy independence to deliver cheaper, cleaner and more secure energy to British homes."David Johnson told Sky News he's"done as much as I can possibly do" to cut energy bills. The tumble drier is off limits too. He now air dries clothes, using a dehumidifier to help with the damp.

The regulator has lowered the price cap, meaning a typical household will see their annual bills fall from £2,053 to £1,923.
