Former Launceston mayor and current councillor Danny Gibson faces serious allegations of grooming, harassment, and indecent assault against children and young adults in Tasmania's theatre scene.
Danny Gibson , a former Launceston mayor and current councilor, is accused of grooming, harassing, or indecently assaulting children and young adults within the local theatre scene. Allegations surfaced in a 2023 Department of Justice risk assessment obtained by the ABC after Cr Gibson attempted to renew his Working with Vulnerable People check. Launceston Mayor Matthew Garwood expressed shock and concern, urging Cr Gibson to resign from the council.
Documents reveal that the Department of Justice, based on the balance of probabilities, found Cr Gibson posed an unacceptable risk to vulnerable persons, including children. The registrar who conducted the risk assessment stated that Cr Gibson allegedly engaged in a pattern of sexually suggestive behavior towards male victims over an extended period, causing significant harm to individuals within the Tasmanian community, including children. Cr Gibson, a former Tasmanian Young Australian of the Year, has served on the City of Launceston Council since 2011 and has taught drama to young people at Stage Right Youth Theatre. He was also involved with Encore Theatre, a local amateur dramatic company, in various roles including director, stage manager, and actor. Following the risk assessment, Cr Gibson was issued a warning that his Working with Vulnerable People registration would be canceled
