Some gardeners intentionally add clover to their lawns, not just for that nitrogen-fixing impact, but for the bee-supporting pollen of the summer flowers and the fact that it is very drought-tolerant and stays vivid green all through a hot summer | OPINION
There’s a patch of clover in my lawn that is thriving on my half-hearted attempts to get rid of it. I call it my lawn, but it would give a true lawn-devotee hives as it’s more of an embroidery of weeds overlaying a background canvas of buffalo. But when the weeds are freshly cut they look lawn-like and uniformly green – except for that patch of darker green clover.
Getting rid of the clover without resorting to poison ought to be simple, according to the experts who insist that you can read the deficiencies in your soil by reading the weeds in your lawn. Lots of dandelions? The soil is probably compacted so that every other plant is daunted by the effort involved in sending down roots. The dandelion’s impressively tenacious tap root can burrow into solid clay, no problems., which forms a bright green clump from about mid-autumn, with masses of seed heads in late winter. Like dandelion, winter grass can cope with compacted soils, so the enthusiastic presence of the winter grass is a sure sign my lawn needs aerating.
