Tasmania's treasurer says he has delivered a 'budget for our times', but unions and a leading economist say high debt and five straight years of deficits before a projected return to surplus is worrying.
His recommendations included growing revenue — whether through new taxes or asset sales — reining in infrastructure spending and stopping big splurges during election campaigns.
Tasmania's financial position is on track to "become worse than that of any other state or territory over the next three years", with $16 billion in debt by 2035, economist Saul Eslake's independent review of the state's finances finds. Spending is forecast to peak this year at $9.7 billion, then drop to $9.5 billion in four years' time."The government seems to have put any consideration of either off to another day, or to another government," he said.
"This budget should be 'rated-R' for graphic content and horror scenes," Labor's treasury spokesman Josh Willie said. Australian Education Union state secretary David Genford said Tasmanians were anxiously trying to work out where the cuts would come from. "If the government believes there are cuts to make, they should name them up rather than handballing responsibility to others," Ms Pentland said. With not much unexpected spending to sweeten the debt, deficits and departmental cuts, the treasurer is in for one hell of a sell job.Ilya's life savings were stolen when he transferred $280K from NAB to Commonwealth Bank.
