A leaked image suggests that the Chinese-market Toyota Wildlander, a rebadged version of the RAV4, may receive a significant redesign. The image, purportedly from a dealer meeting, showcases a new front and rear fasciae, alongside potentially updated doors and lighting elements. This leak hints at the upcoming reveal of the fifth-generation RAV4, which is expected to debut at the Shanghai motor show in April 2025.
The fifth-generation Toyota RAV4 , or at least its Chinese-market version, appears to have been leaked online. A single image was published on Chinese social media network Weibo and re-shared by Japanese outlet Creative Trend, reportedly taken at a GAC Toyota dealer meeting in China. This is reportedly a Wildlander from the GAC Toyota joint venture, which currently exists as a lightly restyled version of the RAV4 produced in China by the FAW Toyota joint venture.
Creative Trend reports the new Wildlander will be revealed at the Shanghai motor show on April 23, 2025, which suggests a reveal of the new RAV4 won’t be far behind. The next-generation RAV4 has already been spied testing in the US. The current Wildlander differs largely in the styling of its front and rear fasciae, with it and the RAV4 otherwise sharing the same bodywork and TNGA-K platform. The new-generation mid-sized SUV is expected to ride on an updated version of the TNGA-K platform, and continue to offer hybrid and plug-in hybrid power. It will likely get Toyota’s new fifth-generation hybrid system, as seen in the new Camry. In the sedan, this sees a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine mated with a new electric motor and battery for a total system output of 170kW. Unlike the latest Camry, the RAV4 appears to be getting new doors. These feature sharp creases, reminiscent of the smaller C-HR. Up front, the new-generation SUV has C-shaped lighting elements and a similar ‘hammerhead’ look to other recent Toyota products like the new Camry. The angular wheel-arches and creasing at the bottom of the doors, however, closely resemble those same details on the current RAV4. While we have yet to see inside the next-gen SUV, a pair of 12.3-inch screens – one for the infotainment system, the other for the digital instrument cluster – may feature, as they do in the Camry. Toyota has confirmed it isn’t looking to rock the boat with its new RAV4. “RAV4 is easy,” Toyota Motor North America product planning head Cooper Ericksen told Automotive News in July 2024. “We have other product segments that are difficult, but the customer has spoken clearly with what they want with the RAV4: The size, the packaging, the level of performance, technology. “We could sell 500,000 of those things a year if we could build them, so we do not want to mess up that formula.” The company said the RAV4 had turned into its Camry over the last 10 years in terms of total sales. In Australia last year, it was the brand’s best-selling vehicle. It fell just short of being Australia’s best-selling vehicle overall, with its 58,718 deliveries shaded by the Ford Ranger (62,593). The current RAV4 was released locally in 2019
