Even Victoria’s Education Minister, James Merlino, conceded on Friday that many of the online learning methods schools will try this week are an exercise in hoping for the best

Most parents will be staring into the unknown when students log on for the first day of a full term of home schooling on Wednesday.Victorian students will begin a term of remote schooling on Wednesday.“The online environment is not new to us, however the notion of remote learning with limited/no face-to-face interaction is taking teachers into uncharted territory,” the head of the Australian Principals’ Federation, Julie Podbury, told Victorian government school principals last week.

“Plenty of schools, especially secondary schools, have been using digital technology for a fair while now and this [pandemic] has obviously accelerated things but it’s not like they’re starting from scratch,” says David Howes, the deputy secretary of the Department of Education and Training. Andrew Dalgleish, principal of Montpellier Primary School, said the check-in would double as a mental welfare check for children.

Mr Dalgleish believes his teachers' toughest challenge will be to find the lightbulb moments that mark a moment of learning for young pupils. “We’ve all just got to be patient and realise as parents there will be days that run smoothly and there will be days that you’ll be tearing your hair out,” Mr Merlino said.Demands on VCE students will be more exacting. There is universal acceptance that the COVID-19 pandemic will disrupt VCE students the most, hence the government’s decision to push back end-of-year exams until at least December.
