With skimpies, himpies, wet T-shirt competitions and pearlers in its history, a beloved WA institution is up for sale and locals hope it keeps its traditions.
The Roebuck Bay Hotel is one of the Kimberley's most well-known landmarks, with its Thursday night wet T-shirt competitions as popular among tourists as a sunset camel ride on Cable Beach.
For a brief period in the 1950s, patrons could even get a haircut at the bar while they sipped on a middy in exchange for a beer in return.Indeed, 'The Roey', as it is affectionately known, has had a colourful 132-year history, which publican Peter Coppin admits has involved plenty of "sin and debauchery"."If you're not having fun, you may as well go home.
After days at sea, they would seek refuge in the bars and gambling schools which lined the road now known as Dampier Terrace. "People love a beer and there was a quid in it so people built these little places for them," Mr Johnston said.
