Shadow Health Minister Anne Ruston says less than 15 per cent of medicine graduates are choosing to train as general practitioners.
“Which means that we are in a downward spiral in terms of the number of GPs that are Australian trained,” she told Sky News host Cory Bernardi.
“Which means we’re increasing our reliance on overseas-trained doctors which is an unsustainable situation going forward.”

GPs struggle to keep their ‘doors open’Medicare rebate back to patients just “hasn’t kept pace” with the cost of “providing high-quality comprehensive care”, Australian Medical Association Vice President Dr Danielle McMullen says. “GPs have increasingly struggled to keep their doors open, provide that care to patients at a low or no cost,” she told Sky News Australia. “We are seeing the cost of consultations increase and the outer pocket cost to patients rise. “The government does need to step in here to make general practice more affordable to patients, and that’s where we see that we need some short-term action to make sure that we can continue to provide care, particularly to our most vulnerable patients.”
