Ariarne Titmus and Katie Ledecky have said everything they need to say and done everything they need to do. Now the time has arrived for the two distance superstars to collide in the most anticipated race of the Olympic swimming program at 12.20pm AEST on Monday.
Afterwards, she said she had never felt so relaxed before a race and was relieved the showdown, which has been pencilled in for two years since she upset Ledecky at the 2019 World Championships, was finally here. “I felt really good, it was probably the most relaxed I’ve felt at a meet for a long time. At nationals in April I was way more nervous because it was my first race since my injury, I didn’t really know what to expect.“At trials, it’s nerve-racking, obviously, just trying to make the team. I felt like tonight I was really relaxed, just tried to conserve my emotions for tomorrow morning. I think I did that well, I’m just happy to be in one of the middle lanes.
Earlier on Sunday night, world record holder Kaylee McKeown safely navigated her way through to the semi-finals of the 100m backstroke after a series of record-breaking swims from her key medal rivals.
