Voice emotion should not trump practicalities; Activist urban elite will hold the power; Qho will pay for Victoria’s huge debt?; Easy come, easy go in tax dollars; Fossil-fuel merchants should pay up.

It was early in 2015, more than 12 months before he was elected to federal parliament, that I received a letter from one Julian Leeser. ., yet we had never met although, like most with an inquiring mind, I did some research. By September 16, 2016, Leeser had taken his seat in the House of Representatives, and he was now my local member.

However, it was the Constitution that he spoke of with passion, a passion driven by the inquiring mind of a 10-year-old, not asking his parents for a BMX bike or cricket bat, but for a copy of the Australian Constitution.Advertisement When confronted with opposition this bureaucracy goes into a foetal position. So if the Voice provides negative advice it is very likely that decisions will be deferred, inquiries initiated and months-long, if not years-long, delays occur.

As a private citizen, I admit to my concerns increasing, not decreasing. No one objects to constitutional recognition of Indigenous peoples as first inhabitants of this great continent. There is ignorance and opposition to The Voice among significant numbers of Indigenous in regional and remote areas, where most of the unrelenting day-to-day societal problems exist.
