Sussan Ley has lashed out at Anthony Albanese after he revealed details about the inquiry into Scott Morrison's ministerial portfolios, saying the Prime Minister is 'obsessed and consumed' by past politics.

Mr Albanese revealed on Friday former High Court justice Virginia Bell will lead the inquiry, which was first flagged following the release of the Solicitor General's legal advice on the appointments earlier in the week.

"Now he's talked about an inquiry, he's talked about public submissions, it's got a report by the 25th of November – that is three rate rises away," she said.

"The terms of reference also require the inquiry to examine and report on practices and processes applying to ministerial appointments, including the public disclosure of these appointments.
