Prime Minister Anthony Albanese congratulates independent Kate Chaney for winning the seat of Curtin, as Liberal Celia Hammond concedes defeat.

Liberal Celia Hammond has conceded defeat to independent Kate Chaney in the previously safe blue-ribbon seat of Curtin, in Perth's leafy western suburbs.At last count, Ms Chaney lead 50.9 per cent to 49.1 per cent on a two-party preferred basis.

In a statement, Ms Hammond said as counting of votes continued, it had become clear that Ms Chaney would win.Celia Hammond said it had been a privilege to serve the electorate. Ms Chaney is a so-called teal independent, who campaigned on a platform of more action on climate change and improving integrity in federal politics.Women's voices important: Albanese

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese congratulated Ms Chaney on her victory and reiterated the importance of female voices in parliament."And people who have been voted for and elected like Kate Chaney, as well as members of the opposition, deserve the right to be heard.More to come.
