Opposition Senate leader Simon Birmingham will retire from politics and not seek re-election next year.
He is one of the most senior moderates in the Liberal party.
The senator was first elected to represent South Australia in 2007, and previously served as minister for education, trade, and finance under Coalition governments. He was appointed to cabinet under former prime minister Tony Abbott and held cabinet positions under him, Malcolm Turnbull and Scott Morrison, and sits in Peter Dutton's shadow cabinet."Birmo has a young family and I know he's going to look forward to spending more time with them," Mr Dutton said.Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said Senator Birmingham was respected across the parliament, and was a person of "integrity".
"It is understandable he has made this decision but I wish him all the very best," Mr Albanese said in the chamber.Photo shows A woman in a baby blue shirt raises her handUnrest, Conflict and War Photo shows A person dressed in black standing next to a pile of debris and in front of a building and banner with face of a man and womanGovernment and Politics
