Following a media delegation addressing the detention of Uighur people in Xinjiang, Liberal Senator Andrew Bragg says “we need to be careful of any sort of Chinese phobia”.
“We do have a good relationship with China, it is an important partner,” he told Sky News on Thursday. “Yes, there have been issues in the relationship, and we seek to deal with those in a particular way – if it’s influence, we have a foreign interference act.
” Chinese Ambassador to Australia Cheng Jingye told a media delegation in Canberra on Thursday that the allegation “one million Uighurs” were being held in detention was “fake news”. However, moments later Mr Cheng confirmed Uyghur people had been forced into re-education and “deradicalisation” camps in Xinjiang to curb “extremist ideology”. Image: Getty
