Large parts of Australia will feel the brunt of an extreme heatwave on Thursday with sweltering temperatures forecast for three capital cities.

The country recorded its hottest day on record on Tuesday, but records are expected to be defeated on Thursday as Sydney, Adelaide and Canberra are all expected to climb above 40 degrees.
