The party is preparing to take court action if the commissioner does not grant a seven-day extension for the Liberals to nominate candidates by 4pm on today.
The NSW Liberal Party has given the Electoral Commission a deadline of 4pm today to respond to a letter articulating “issues” the party has with the electoral process, which it argues contributed to its failure to lodge more than 100 candidate nominations by deadline.
It also points to section 286 of the Local Government Regulation 2021 which stipulates the nomination deadline is the fifth Wednesday before polling day “or such other date as the election manager determines in a particular case”. The party president and moderate faction warlord is fighting to retain his position amid a blame game in the aftermath of the debacle, which meant 140 Liberal candidates in 16 councils weren’t nominated in time.
