Locals advocating for a radiation treatment centre in Mount Gambier vow to keep fighting, after a study finds it would not be 'clinically safe' despite similar centres operating in other regional SA towns.
A study on the feasibility of a radiation treatment centre in Mount Gambier has found it would not be clinically safe.The local health network says it will invest in other improvements to cancer services, but treatment centre advocates say they won't give up.
He said much of the staff would likely need to be "fly-in, fly-out", which would fall short of safe practice guidelines."Other centres that have this in Mildura and Griffith have a fly-in, fly-out workforce, which is not best practice for radiation therapy in the region.The study also found the centre would require out-of-pocket payments from patients and outside funding to operate.
SA Health Minister Chris Picton said the feasibility study was independent and consulted more than 500 people. "It's not just a hobby we've been working on; we're trying to change people's lives on the Limestone Coast.""It's hard for many in our group who've been touched by cancer to rationalise that people fighting cancer in other places like Mildura, Griffith and Warrnambool, can have cancer treatment that we can't," he said.
