Residents of the Northern Rivers town were left disappointed by the lack of clarity in the Perrottet government’s response to the recent floods.
As the sun shone on the Wilsons River in Lismore on Wednesday, it was hard to imagine the violent torrent of water that ripped through the town on February 28, leaving thousands homeless.
Watts said emotions were still high in the community, and many were struggling with the uncertainty of not knowing the government’s plans for houses affected by the flood. “We know the highest risk areas in our community. Why do we have to go through another six months of waiting for what should be an obvious response?”
“The further we get away from the 28 February date, the more diluted the response seems to be. When there’s media, cameras, 100 tonnes of rubbish in the street, the promises are very bold and very brave, but as we move away, I get the feeling it’s diluted.”
