Any news about the second amount of economic support payments supposedly going to happen today?Insiders host David Speers brought this up on ABC News Breakfast, speculating that the Melbourne situation would be weighing heavily on the minds of the Treasurer and Prime Minister when they consider the JobKeeper and JobSeeker programs.
"Their line is that there will be further support and another phase and we are now in a new phase of this crisis," Speers said. The support schemes are due to wrap up in September, with Josh Frydenberg due to speak about that when he gives an economic statement on July 23 — which is about two weeks' from now."You would think it is going to have to be something like the JobKeeper payment, maybe a bit less but, again, not restricted to just one State, the national Government can't do that, or indeed one or two or three industries," Speers said.
"It will have to be, once again, an economy-wide approach that tests businesses with a turnover to see who needs ongoing support. The difficulty is propping up so-called zombie businesses that aren't going to return, aren't going to get through this.We know we've got a National Cabinet meeting today, so it's possible Scott Morrison might speak about support packages when he fronts the media afterwards.
