Crash rocks Practice session in Mexico | 01:08Oscar Piastri has sensationally been eliminated in the first phase of qualifying at the Mexico City Grand Prix.
One of his laps was ruled out for missing a corner but even that time would not have got him into the top 15 in what was an incredible disappointment for McLaren despite Piastri’s teammate Lando Norris coming in fastest with a lap of one minute and 16.505 seconds. “It’s a tricky circuit but I don’t think today was down to it being tricky. I just made a very poor mistake.
Norris was fastest again in Q2 as a red flag caused by a crash by RB Racing’s Yuki Tsunoda brought the session to a close in the final minute. Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz was third fastest, while championship leader Max Verstappen of Red Bull was fourth.
