Live: More withdrawals as fleet prepares for Sydney to Hobart start
on Boxing Day from a start line near Shark Island on Sydney Harbour.
A cannon is fired to send the fleet on its way. This year there will be two starting lines off Nielsen Park in Sydney’s eastern suburbs. There are northern and southern lines. The northern line containing the bigger boats, will start off the front line, just north of Shark Island. The rest of the fleet will start from the southern line, 0.2 nautical miles away. Each line will round a different mark, to equalise the distance travelled. The whole fleet will then head out to sea, and round Mark Zulu, one nautical mile east of the Heads. If any of the boats are forced to retire from the race due to incidents, damage or injury, they will try to make for the nearest port, such as Wollongong, Jervis Bay, Ulladulla, Bega, etc, depending on how far down the coast they are.
The route takes them down the NSW and Victorian coasts and out over Bass Strait, then down the east coast of Tasmania, through Storm Bay and past Tasman Island into the Derwent River.
