Slavery Remembrance Day will be commemorated this week so people can recognise Liverpool's ongoing slave trade legacy
As a black women in Liverpool, Michelle Charters has worked tirelessly to ensure the city recognises the history and ongoing legacy of its role in the transatlantic slave trade.

I'm proud to be Scouse and I'm proud to be Muslim' Michelle told the ECHO she was introduced to working with the museum by Dorothy Kuya - the community activist from Toxteth who campaigned against racism in the education system. Dorothy, a leading British communist, led the successful campaign to establish Liverpool's International Slavery Museum - and was described as "Liverpool's greatest fighter against racism and racial intolerance".
Professor Adi told the ECHO: "It is a great honour to be invited to Liverpool, but particularly to give the Dorothy Kuya lecture. I knew Dorothy and worked with her a little in the early 90s so it is a great honour and opportunity to speak about these issues. Professor Adi is currently in a dispute with his employer, the University of Chichester, who has suspended his unique black history course and threatened him with redundancy. The University of Chichester told the Guardian the university had made the difficult decision to suspend or close a number of postgraduate courses due to not being financially viable.
"That helps us orient ourselves in the world today. It is very important we have an honest look at history for everyone - for working people, women, Africans, all human beings. When great crimes are committed there has to be repair. We have to find ways to deal with these legacies and find measures to deal with them."
