Health authorities in Victoria have issued an 'important update' on monkeypox following an increase in local transmission which now accounts for about half of cases in the state.

Local transmission of monkeypox is on the increase in Victoria, prompting health authorities in the state to put out an"important update" on the viral disease.

Monkeypox - which was last month declared a Communicable Disease Incident of National Significance by Australian authorities - causes a distinctive bumpy rash, skin lesions and flu-like symptoms such as fever and body aches. Victoria's Chief Health Officer Professor Brett Sutton said health authorities were issuing what he described as"an important update".
