Dairy farmers in the small town of Simpson say they are shocked after finding a 150-kilogram seal in a paddock with some curious cows — around 30km from the nearest beach.

A dairy farmer who found a seal on their property around 30 kilometres from the ocean says the community is in shock and the mammal continues to move further inland. The property owners have contacted Zoos VictoriaKarli McGee said she first saw the seal on their property at Simpson, in south-west Victoria, on Sunday in the middle of a cow paddock.

"We went in the tractor down to the paddock and first thought it was a pig. When it got up and started moving, we saw it was definitely not a pig, it was a seal." Ms McGee said she contacted the Victorian Fisheries Authority after the find and was referred to Melbourne Zoo, whose expert staff would likely complete the rescue.
