It took about 30 years of planning, but ferry service returned between South Amboy and Manhattan and its already getting rave reviews from riders.
“It was fantastic, very relaxing. I enjoyed it.” said Ann Brooke of South Amboy, who swapped her NJ Transit train ride for the ferry Monday morning. “I like being above ground, as opposed to the Tunnel. I love it.”
Free transfers are available for South Amboy ferry riders to all other NY Waterway ferry terminals — in Edgewater, Hoboken, Jersey City, Manhattan and Weehawken. The concept of building apartments and town homes near transit stations, bus stops and ferries is called transit-oriented development and is designed so residents can be in walking distance of public transit and don’t have to rely on a car.
Addition of the ferry terminal makes South Amboy a true multimodal hub with NJ Transit rail and bus service and a ferry terminal that is accessible to Garden State Parkway’s exit 125.
