Thomas Kwoyelo, who rose through the ranks of Joseph Kony's terror group the Lord Resistance Army, has been sentenced to four decades behind bars, in the first case of its kind in the East African country.

Thomas Kwoyelo was a commander in Joseph Kony 's Lord's Resistance Army terror group, committing a litany of offences between 1996 and 2005.

Thomas Kwoyelo was found guilty of multiple counts of crimes against humanity in August for acts he committed while a commander in the Lord's Resistance Army . Formed in the 1980s, the LRA led a two-decade campaign of terror across a number of African countries, which saw 100,000 people killed and 60,000 children abducted.

He was found guilty of murder, rape, torture, pillaging, abduction and the destruction of settlements for internally displaced people.His legal team told the court it intends to appeal the decision.
