Lebanon's badly mismanaged economy has also been in freefall since October, the government is riddled with corruption, and more than 1.5 million refugees – about one quarter of Lebanon's usual population – have poured in following the war in neighbouring Syria.
"The pound has declined 80 per cent. People are seeing their life savings wiped out. And there are capital controls on the banks, so for what savings are left, people can only withdraw $100 or $200 at a time. They can't access their money. It's a shocking and sad development," she said. "There has to come a point where people say 'I'm prepared to make hard decisions for the next little while for the sake of the broader people'."
"Australia supports any constructive international support for Lebanon, and Macron's focus has been valued here by the Lebanese people who see it as a way of encouraging this reform," she said.
