After being an associate to High Court justice Gerard Brennan in 1992, Simonetta Astolfi suspected her career had peaked before it even began.
“The Chief Justice [Sir Anthony Mason] permitted Sir Gerard to read out the decision, given he had written the leading judgment [which recognised native title].Last Friday, Ms Astolfi – now a partner at Maddocks – joined those celebrating Sir Gerard’s life at a requiem Mass in SydneyIn Ms Astolfi’s year at the court, Sir Gerard also handed down significant judgments in criminal law , medical procedures for the disabled and eligibility to stand for parliament .
“I used to say to the judge that it was obviously no coincidence I was one of his associates that year and that he really peaked – which was clearly not correct [given he became chief justice in 1995].”Ms Astolfi spent 1993 at the European Parliament writing papers about Mabo before joining Blake Dawson Waldron as a corporate lawyer.
