The nature reserve is cut off by the tide and filled with history

Hilbre Islands are an archipelago off the coast of Wirral and they house a unique ecosystem that includes rare plants, wildlife and stunning views.

For example, the Limonium britannicum, a subspecies of the Rock Sea Lavender and the Hilbre Islands are home to around 10% of the world's distribution of the flowering plant. Hilbre is one of only five sites in the world to have this scarce flowering plant.READ MORE:I went seal spotting but found something far more beautiful

Archaeological excavations were carried out on Hilbre Island in the 1920s, which unearthed artefacts from the Neolithic, Bronze and Roman periods, showing the island itself was inhabited around 6,500 years ago. During the 13th and 14th centuries pilgrims would trek to the island to pay respects to a saint said to have founded the church on the island.

At an environment and transport committee on March 12, Wirral Council agreed to lease out several buildings on Hilbre Island near West Kirby to the Hilbre Community Land Trust on a peppercorn rent for 30 years. This will be a first step to support the trust to establish a base on the island, repair the derelict buildings, and begin plans for the new art studio and research spaces.
