A new agreement will mean extra flights can fly over Moreton Bay at night, while Jetstar is set to install quieter engines.

In a breakthrough in the fight to reduce aircraft noise over Brisbane, three major airlines using the international airport can now arrive and depart over Moreton Bay at night more frequently.

Until 2017, Brisbane Airport had a maximum tailwind speed of 10 knots, with no safety incidents. CASA then halved it to five knots to meet international standards. In a letter to Brisbane’s federal MPs and Infrastructure and Transport Minister Catherine King – seen by– BAC chief executive Gert-Jan de Graaff says the change will mean a “material increase in the number of arrivals and flights over water, particularly during sensitive night-time hours”.“These airlines believe they can modify their operations in certain circumstances that will enable fewer flights over the populated areas of the city without any reduction in safety,” he writes.

“I am very happy to inform you Jetstar advised BAC it will be fitting new vortex generators to its current legacy fleet of A320s, which will reduce noise from those aircraft on approach to Brisbane Airport.“The fitting of vortex generators was one idea raised by members of the community via the recent rounds of community engagement. Jetstar has indicated this program of modifications will commence later this year.
