The cold case of Kirra-Lea McLoughlin has hit a breakthrough, with police charging her boyfriend with murder almost eight years after her death.

The prosecution will allege that her boyfriend, Paul McDonald, choked her during a fight they had, leading to fatal swelling on her brain. Police claim that he hit her head into the back of the toilet wall, struck her to the forehead and hit the back of her head on the floor.The Queensland police Homicide Investigation Unit reviewed the case, and then an Investigation Centre was established at Gympie.

He said police were now in a “strong position to present a good case to the courts and proceed with a successful prosecution”.
