A man in Australia is facing murder charges after allegedly neglecting his stepfather, leading to his death. The body was discovered over a year later.
A man accused of sedating his stepfather and leaving him to die, keeping his rotting corpse in his bed for over a year, is set to stand trial for murder. Police discovered the mummified remains of 69-year-old Tomislav Nemes at the family's Gold Coast waterfront home in April 2023 after relatives requested a welfare check. A committal hearing in the Southport Magistrates Court revealed Mr. Nemes likely died from sepsis caused by infected bed sores sometime between August 2021 and February 2022.
His stepson, Nikola Golem, and the victim's wife, Dragica Nemes (Mr. Golem's mother), lived in the Benowa home with the decomposing body. During the hearing, the family's general practitioner, Ian Dickinson, testified that Mr. Nemes had been overweight, treated for diabetes and high blood pressure, and suffered from chronic lower back pain. However, his health conditions were under control at his last clinic visit in January 2020. The court learned the family was skeptical of 'western medicine' and consulted a naturopath who prescribed herbal remedies before Mr. Nemes' death. Mr. Golem allegedly told police his stepfather was bedridden, refused medical attention, and resisted an ambulance transport to the hospital.Police employed an undercover officer to befriend Mr. Golem during their investigation. Detective Senior Constable Marie Adams revealed that police interviewed Mr. Golem a second time due to concerning comments he made. She stated, 'Due to Mr. Golem asking our to take a hit out on me and my colleague and offering $100,000 to kill us basically — and blow-up police stations.' Detective Senior Constable Adams further testified that during his second interview, Mr. Golem confessed to knowing his stepfather 'was going to die and it was all financially-based.' Mr. Golem's defense barrister, Martin Longhurst, argued that his client was 'readily susceptible to suggestion' and that his statements to police were unreliable. Dr. Dickinson, the family physician, believed Mr. Golem suffered from a mild intellectual impairment due to an acquired brain injury from a childhood accident requiring surgery to remove part of his skull. Mr. Golem did not enter a plea and was committed to stand trial at the Brisbane Supreme Court
