Jared Vallejo was pushed out of his family home because of who he is
Jared Vallejo, originally from Guatemala - a Central American country south of Mexico - experienced years of “bullying, persecution and attacks” all because he was gay.
“It was really awful because one of the things was for the majority of my teenage years my parents didn’t know I was gay. So they didn’t know these people were doing stuff to me every time I left the house. My mum would send me for the groceries but there was conflict because I couldn’t tell her why I didn’t want to leave my house.
The catalyst for Jared leaving his home country came just under two years ago. He claims the gang members physically attacked his parents and almost killed his dad to “send a message”.As an asylum-seeker, he is prohibited from working and only has the Home Office allowance - £47.39 a week - to survive on. After buying essentials such as food and travel, Jared has little to no income left to spend on socialising which in turn has impacted the queer friendships he has.
“Here, when I meet people, friendships never work because I don’t have the option to go to restaurants or for drinks. I don’t have the income to do that. I have gone on walks with people but most friendships require money to do things like parties or travel. So I try not to socialise at all because I don’t have the means for it - it has made getting friends very difficult.”
