A 28-year-old surfer from Port Lincoln, South Australia, has been identified as the victim of a suspected fatal shark attack.

The victim of a suspected fatal shark attack off South Australia's west coast has been identified as 28-year-old Lance Appleby. SA Police said the man, from Port Lincoln, was surfing at Granites Beach south of Streaky Bay on Thursday evening when witnesses reported seeing a shark attack him. Emergency services resumed their search for Mr Appleby's body this morning, after crews were initially called to the beach just after 7pm.

Police and locals have described the incident as a tragedy and have expressed condolences to the victim's family, friends and colleagues. Police said a surfboard had been recovered from the water, but that air, ground and water searches would continue today
