A man was led away by police after he wandered through an anti-racism rally in blackface and screamed at protesters.
The anti-racism demonstration at Nathan Phillips Square on Saturday was part of global demonstrations against racism. The anti-racism protests, sparked by the police killing of George Floyd 13 days ago in the US, have been heated and have at times turned violent – with protesters clashing with police and agitators vandalising property.
The man was filmed standing among protesters who appeared agitated as he smiled. A reporter on the scene asked him, “What are you doing here?” The man didn’t respond to the question, only answering back “what?”The man was led away by police after arguing with protesters.He was soon approached by police and was escorted out of the demonstration as he argued with protesters who surrounded him as he was walked out.
“If I want to put this on my face I can put it on my face!” the man yelled at a protester pointing at his face. “I’m not trying to disrespect you!” he screamed.The man was apprehended at the scene and reporters were initially told he’d been charged with breach of peace and causing a disturbance.In Toronto thousands of protesters have called for justice for Regis Korchinski-Paquet. The 29-year-old Afro-Indigenous woman died after she fell from her balcony while having an interaction with police.
