A 40-year-old man was shot and killed by police in Adelaide after allegedly threatening officers with a knife. The incident occurred during a mental health crisis involving the man.

A man has been shot dead by police after allegedly threatening officers with a knife at a home in Adelaide ’s southern suburbs. The 40-year-old man was allegedly harming himself with the knife when police arrived at the home on Highfield Dr at Craigburn Farm just after midnight on Tuesday. The man’s girlfriend, who was on a video call with him, called police to report a mental health incident when he began self-harming, said SA Police Commissioner Grant Stevens.

When officers attempted to engage with the man, he allegedly threatened them with the knife. After a Taser failed to subdue him, police fired more than one shot, Stevens confirmed. “I can say having watched the bodyworn video this was a highly stressful, dangerous situation, and the police officers appear at this time to have acted in the accordance with their training and taken the action necessary to protect themselves and the ambulance officers who were on the scene,” Stevens said on Tuesday. Paramedics attended to the man before he was transported to the hospital, where he later died. No injuries were reported to the police officers. Stevens said the Taser may have been ineffective because the man was covered by a blanket at the time. Highfield Dr has been closed following the incident, and the public has been advised to avoid the area. “There will be an extensive inquiry. We have declared this a commissioner’s inquiry,” Stevens said
